Post-doctoral Opportunity in Environmental Chemistry and Stress Ecology: Enhancing the Phytoremediation of Pharmaceuticals in a Sewage Lagoon

We are seeking an excellent postdoctoral fellow to collaborate on a unique research opportunity to improve water quality in Lake Winnipeg and the Red River Basin. Located in Manitoba, Canada, Lake Winnipeg is the 11th largest freshwater lake in the world, and has unfortunately been suffering from excess nutrient and contaminant inputs over the past several decades. Development in the watershed has also promoted the input of pharmaceuticals and personal care product, and their release is becoming an increasing ecological concern.

The research team has developed a multidisciplinary program to try and test a series of hypotheses around the ability of submersed aquatic macrophytes to facilitate the breakdown of pharmaceuticals in a rural community's sewage lagoon. The work will involve both field and laboratory components to investigate the relationship between macrophyte community structure, and pharmaceutical dissipation under a variety of scenarios. This will improve the functioning of sewage lagoons by promoting the removal of organic contaminants, specifically pharmaceuticals and thereby enhancing overall water quality. In turn, this will enhance overall water quality and environmental sustainability.

The ideal candidate will have a strong multidisciplinary background in analytical environmental chemistry, aquatic toxicology, and/or related fields, a strong publication record, and excellent communications skills. This project will be for a year in duration, with possible extension depending on availability of continued funding.
