Metal budgets of lakes and catchments on the Precambrian Shield: compartment sizes and fluxes between compartments (Processes)
Objectives being Investigated
1. Establish the metal levels in compartments and the fluxes between compartments in a catchment that is not impacted by local point sources of metals
2. Evaluate the role of long-range transport vs. internal sources (weathering) of metals
Study/Sampling Design
- a small oligotrophic lake (Plastic Lake) on the Precambrian Shield in Haliburton County, Ontario, and its catchment basin constitute the study site
- input of metals from the atmosphere is measured as bulk and wet-only deposition
- the pool size in the forest vegetation (9 tree species, bark, wood, foliage, branches, roots), the upland soils (Lfh, Ae, B, C horizons), the shallow groundwater, the upland stream, the wetland, the lake inflow, the lake, the lake sediments, and the lake outflow are measured
- changes in flux as precipitation passes through the canopy are measured as throughfall, transport from the forest to the soil is measured as litterfall
- changes in metal transport as water moves through the soil column are measured using lysimeters
- the aqueous concentration data are combined with hydrology data to calculate fluxes through the catchment and into and out of the lake
- the storage in the lake sediments is measured via dated sediment cores
- total and soluble (<0.45 um) metals are measured
- Pb isotopes are used to
estimate natural vs anthropogenic sources, and to estimate
weathering rates
