Project Summary
A critical issue is the lack of representative data on natural metal releases to the atmosphere. Reliable estimates of natural emissions of metals into the atmosphere are needed to put into perspective the long term risk to ecosystems from anthropogenic activity associated with metals. The most important volatile metal from an environmental and human health point of view is mercury. The research for 1998-99 is focused on the application of methods previously developed by the applicant for collecting data that adequately quantify the movement of total gaseous mercury (TGM) vapour between natural environments and the atmosphere.
