| Chemical and biological reactions
occurring in lake sediments (early diagenesis) may influence the vertical distribution of
trace elements, and compromise the use of sediment profiles as historical records. This
study will examine the chemical behaviour and determine the post-depositional mobility of
trace elements (Hg, Cd, Cu, Zn, Ni, Pb) in recent lake sediments. The study will provide
basic information (lake selection, metal profiles, metal chemistry) needed to optimize our
research efforts in 1999-2000.
