Summary |
 |
| A knowledge gap exists concerning the
distribution of metals and metalloids among the various size fractions of airborne
particulates, including aerosol. This information is critical for several research
questions, e.g. i) to improve atmospheric transport models required to be able to estimate
the atmospheric deposition around point sources; and ii) to develop procedures that can be
used to discriminate between the various possible natural and anthropogenic sources of
particulates and wet deposition. A major point source of metals and metalloids to the
atmosphere is the emission from pyrometallurgical smelting operations; this project will
have the opportunity to sample and study these particulates using a variety of chemical
analysis techniques. A particular focus will be on new procedures for the small amounts of
size-fractionated material that the sampling protocols will be recovering. |
