Project Summary
The combination of carbon isotopes, nutrients and heavy metals (tracers) in tree-rings constitutes a new environmental monitoring tool that can distinguish between natural and anthropogenic accumulation of metals. The degree of influence on tracer assimilation of the different processes to be studied can vary along a tree. The investigation should address the tracers in tree leaves, branches and stems (rings) with vertical position above ground level, as this variation might have a significant impact on the specification of a dendrochemistry sampling protocol for monitoring of atmospheric pollutants.
